My clock scared me awake. It was 11:30 when I managed to finally greet the morning. The daylight burned my sleepy eyes and I lifted myself up. I ran my fingers through my hair, yawned, and went downstairs.

I was greeted my the smell of breakfast.

"Boo," I said to my mom, as I always had for as long as I could remember.

"Hey! Did you have fun last night? I heard the phone ringing at like, two or something."

"Oh my god mom."

"What? Did something happen?"

"Yeah, I met someone."

"Really? Explain," she said as she sat our plates down. I pulled myself out a chair and began telling my story. During my explanation of the river, she interrupted with millions of "aww’s", "how-cute’s", and "how-sweet’s". I told her that he wanted to go out today and asked her if it was alright.

"Why wouldn’t it be alright? You don’t have to ask, as long as I get to meet him."

"Well, yeah. He’ll be here around two."

"Don’t you know what time it is? Go get ready."

I hurried upstairs and jumped in the shower. I was satisfied at how easy it was to talk to my mom about guys. I just hoped she wouldn’t end up changing her mind. After quickly washing my hair, washing my face, getting out and brushing my teeth, I was done in a half hour. I blow-dried my hair and teased it as usual. Setting it with hair spray, I went to my room and opened my window. The sun was shining in and the early summer breeze was cool and inviting, calling me to come outside. I had a feeling things were going to go my way today.

I looked at the clock. It was almost one. "Time for clothes," I thought. I put my underwear on and strutted over to my closet. I peered inside. Putting on a pair of khaki high-waters and an super tight ACDC t-shirt, I looked in the mirror. I was feeling extra conceited and thought, "I look good." I finished with a little makeup and headed down stairs. By the time I hit the landing, the phone began to ring.

"I’ll get it," I yelled. I answered, "Hello?"

"Yeah, is Iris home?"

"Hi John," I smiled.

"Hi Iris," he mocked.

"You called?"

"Yeah, I just called to tell you that I had a surprise, ok?"

"What do you mean?"

"You’ll see. But I have to go. I gotta stop a few places before I head over.

"I’ll see you then."

"Wait, do you like swimming?"

"Ok. Just be ready."

"Later." I could almost hear him smiling.

I hung up. "Great," I thought. "Swimming." With that, I went back upstairs and put my bathing suit on underneath my clothes. Before I knew it, it was two’o’clock.

"Mom?" I yelled as I jugged down the stairs. She was in the living room. "How do I look?"

"You look fine," she replied. The doorbell rang. My heart jumped into my throat. "Go get it," she stood up with a smile on her face.

"Ok." I walked over to the door and stood in front if it for a while. The doorbell rang again. I looked back at my mom and sighed. I opened the door. There was John, his hair freshly washed and shiny, a green and beige striped t-shirt, and a pair of jeans with a small rip in the knee. He didn’t look like such a bad-ass today, unlike last night, but I guess that’s part of clubbing and gigs.

"Hi," he greeted me, then pulled a bouquet of white daisies from behind his back.

"Oh my god," I gasped.

"You like them?"

"Well, yeah. Of course I do. Come on in." I took the flowers from him and he followed me into our kitchen.

"Where’s your mom?" he asked, looking about the kitchen and peeking through the hallway.

"She’s in the living room. She’s dying to meet you."

"Really?" he giggled.

I put the flowers down on the table and took his hand, leading him into the living room to my mom.

"Hello, you must be John," she said, standing up.

"Yeah, Iris told me a lot about you. You two are very close," he said, shaking her hand.

"Yes, we do and I’m very grateful."

I stood back and let the magic happen. I knew she was completely in love with John. I could tell by the huge smile on her face.

"Now I know where Iris gets her beauty from," he complimented.

"Why, thank you," she blushed. "Well," she continued, "You’d better be going. Have fun. I’ll see you tonight Iris. I’ll try and stay up and wait for you, but I don’t know how lucky I’ll be!"

"Ok mom. I love you." I walked over and hugged her.

"Do you have money?" she asked as turned me lose.

"Don’t worry about that I have enough," John answered before I could say anything. I took John’s hand and we walked into the kitchen. "Nice to meet you!" he yelled as we went out the door.

Down the hall and down the stairs to the sidewalk we went. As we walked, John took my hand and kissed it. "How are you?"

"I’m great." I was still smiling. He looked so good today, it was amazing. I gently sighed to myself and looked ahead.
